Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 2026
EzCal ("we", "our", or "us"), developed by Smarty Apps AI (Google Play) and Fab Feelings Corp (App Store), is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application.
Anonymous-First Account Model
EzCal does not require you to create an account or provide personal information to use the app. When you first open EzCal, an anonymous account is automatically created on your device, and your data is stored under that anonymous identifier in our cloud infrastructure. You may optionally provide an email address to back up your data and recover it on a different device.
Information We Collect
Profile Information (provided by you during onboarding):
- First name
- Sex (used for BMR / calorie calculation)
- Date of birth or age
- Height and weight
- Goal type (lose / maintain / gain weight) and target weight
- Email address (optional, only if you opt in for data backup)
Activity & Nutrition Data:
- Food entries you log (name, calories, macros, meal type, date)
- Exercise entries (name, duration, calories burned)
- Weight entries you record over time
- Daily aggregates (total calories, macros, water intake)
- Photos you take or upload of meals (when using image-based logging)
Camera & Photos:
- Camera access is used only when you actively choose to take a meal photo or scan a barcode. Images are sent to OpenAI for analysis and are not retained beyond the duration of the API call.
- Photo library access is used only when you choose to log a meal from a saved image.
Third-Party AI Processing (OpenAI)
EzCal uses OpenAI (openai.com) to power its AI features. By using the app you agree that the following data may be sent to OpenAI for processing:
- Natural-language food descriptions — when you type what you ate, the text is sent to OpenAI's GPT-4o mini to estimate calories and macronutrients.
- Meal photos — when you photograph a meal, the image is sent to OpenAI's GPT-4o vision model to identify food and estimate nutritional content.
- Exercise descriptions — when you describe a workout, the text is sent to OpenAI's GPT-4o mini to estimate calories burned.
OpenAI's handling of your data is governed by the OpenAI Privacy Policy. We use the OpenAI API under their data usage policy, which prohibits using API-submitted data for model training. We do not send your name, email, or any other personal information to OpenAI.
Other Third-Party Data Sources
- USDA FoodData Central — when you search for a food by name, your search query is sent to the USDA's public food database. This service is operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
- Open Food Facts — when you scan a product barcode, the barcode number is sent to the Open Food Facts public database to retrieve product information. This service is operated by the non-profit Open Food Facts organization.
How We Use Your Information
- Calorie & Macro Calculation: Your profile data (sex, age, height, weight, activity level) is used to compute your daily calorie allowance and macro targets using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation.
- AI-Assisted Logging: Food and exercise descriptions you submit are processed by OpenAI to generate structured nutrition entries.
- Progress Tracking: Your logged entries are aggregated into daily and weekly summaries to show progress toward your goals.
- Optional Account Recovery: If you provide an email, we use it solely to send a confirmation link and to allow you to sign in on another device.
Data Storage and Security
- Your data is stored securely using industry-standard encryption
- Logs and profile data are stored in secure cloud infrastructure (Supabase)
- Row-level security policies ensure your data is only accessible to your account
- We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your data
Data Sharing
We do not sell your personal data. We may share data with:
- OpenAI: Food/exercise descriptions and meal photos for AI processing as described above
- USDA FoodData Central: Food search queries
- Open Food Facts: Barcode numbers for product lookup
- Cloud Infrastructure: Supabase for secure data storage
- Legal Requirements: When required by law or to protect our rights
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access: Request a copy of your personal data
- Edit: Modify or delete any individual food, exercise, or weight entry from within the app
- Delete: Delete your account and all associated data at any time
Health & Medical Disclaimer

Always consult a qualified healthcare professional before making significant changes to your diet or exercise routine, especially if you have a medical condition, are pregnant, or are taking medication.
Data Retention
We retain your data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, all your entries, profile information, and personal data are permanently deleted from our systems.
Children's Privacy
