Welcome to EzCal. These Terms govern your use of our AI-powered calorie tracking and nutrition application.

1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using EzCal, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree to these Terms, please do not use the app.

2. Description of Service

EzCal is a calorie tracking and nutrition application that allows you to:

• Log food and exercise using natural language, food photos, or barcode scanning
• Receive AI-generated estimates of calories and macronutrients
• Calculate a personalized daily calorie allowance using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation
• Track weight, water intake, and progress toward weight goals
• View daily, weekly, and historical summaries of your nutrition data
• Save favorite meals for quick re-logging
• Set meal and water reminders

3. Anonymous Accounts

• EzCal creates an anonymous account automatically when you first open the app — no signup is required
• You may optionally provide an email address to back up your data and recover it on another device
• Your data is tied to your device. If you uninstall the app or change devices without linking an email, your data may not be recoverable
• You are responsible for the accuracy of profile information you provide (sex, age, height, weight, goals)

4. Subscription and Payments

• Free users may log a limited number of food entries (currently 10 lifetime entries)
• Premium subscriptions remove this limit and unlock additional features
• Subscriptions are billed monthly or yearly as selected
• Subscription ownership is tied to your Apple ID (App Store) or Google Play account
• You can manage or cancel your subscription at any time through your store account
• Refunds are handled according to the App Store's or Google Play's refund policy

5. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

• Use the service for any unlawful purpose
• Provide false profile information to circumvent the calorie calculation
• Submit content that infringes on others' rights
• Attempt to reverse engineer or hack the application
• Use the service in a way that imposes excessive load on our servers
• Resell or redistribute access to the service

6. Content Ownership

• You retain ownership of your food entries, weight history, photos, and other content you create
• You grant us a license to process your content to provide our services
• We do not claim ownership of your content

7. AI Features and Processing

EzCal uses artificial intelligence to power several core features. By using the app, you consent to your input being processed by these AI systems as described below.

7.1 Natural Language Food Logging

• When you describe food in natural language (e.g., "I had a bowl of oatmeal"), your text is sent to OpenAI's GPT-4o mini to estimate calories, protein, carbohydrates, and fat.
• The AI returns structured nutrition estimates that you can edit before logging.

7.2 Meal Photo Analysis

• When you photograph a meal, the image is sent to OpenAI's GPT-4o vision model to identify food and estimate nutritional content.
• Photos are not retained by our AI providers beyond the duration of the API call.

7.3 Exercise Estimation

• When you describe exercise, your text is sent to OpenAI's GPT-4o mini to estimate duration and calories burned.

7.4 AI Limitations and User Responsibility

• AI-generated nutrition and exercise estimates are approximations and may contain inaccuracies. You are responsible for reviewing all AI-generated output before relying on it.
• Calorie counts depend on portion sizes, preparation methods, and ingredients — factors the AI cannot always determine accurately from limited input.
• We do not use your food entries or photos to train AI models. Audio and text data sent to OpenAI is subject to OpenAI's privacy policy.
• We are not liable for health or fitness decisions made based on AI-generated content. Always verify critical nutritional information with a qualified professional.

8. Health and Medical Disclaimer

EzCal is intended for general wellness and informational purposes only. It is not a medical device and does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. The calorie targets, macro recommendations, and progress estimates generated by the app are based on standard formulas (such as the Mifflin-St Jeor equation) and should not be relied upon for medical decisions.

You should consult a qualified healthcare professional before:

• Beginning a calorie deficit or surplus diet
• Making significant changes to your eating or exercise habits
• Using the app if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, or have a medical condition (including diabetes, eating disorders, or heart conditions)

The minimum calorie floors enforced by EzCal (1200 kcal/day for women, 1500 kcal/day for men) are general guidelines and may not be appropriate for everyone. Do not use EzCal if you have a history of disordered eating.

9. Third-Party Data Sources

EzCal uses the following third-party services to retrieve food data:

• USDA FoodData Central: Public food database operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
• Open Food Facts: Public product database operated by the non-profit Open Food Facts organization. Used for barcode lookups.

The accuracy of nutrition information from these sources cannot be guaranteed by EzCal. Always verify packaging information for accuracy.

10. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law:

• The service is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind
• We are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, including those resulting from health decisions based on app data
• Our total liability is limited to the amount you paid for the service in the past 12 months

11. Account Termination

• You may delete your account at any time through the app
• We may terminate accounts that violate these Terms
• Upon termination, your data will be permanently deleted

12. Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the new Terms.
